Dear U.N.I.T.Y. Family,
There is a question that most of us never think to ask, even though it may be the most important question of our spiritual lives: Whose future am I actually living for? We pray. We seek. We fast. We journal. We collect prophetic words and underline them. We carry visions of who we will become — and we dress every one of those pictures in the language of faith.
But somewhere between the altar and our ambitions, a subtle and dangerous confusion takes root. We begin to mistake the voice of our longings for the voice of our God. This edition of Living Testimony News is an invitation to press into that question with honesty — and with hope.
1. The Weight of True Prophecy: What Isaiah 53 Teaches Us
Isaiah opens this remarkable chapter not with triumph, but with a lament of unbelief. Even before the vision unfolds, the prophet anticipates that most people will not receive what God is about to say. This is the first mark of true prophecy: it is rarely popular. It does not play to the crowd. It does not promise what itching ears want to hear. It speaks what Heaven decrees — and then waits, often in obscurity, for history to vindicate it.
Consider the weight of what Isaiah received. Writing approximately 700 years before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, he described the Suffering Servant with a specificity that no human imagination could manufacture. He saw a man despised and rejected. He saw grief carried like a garment. He saw wounds that were not deserved, a punishment that belonged to others, and a silence that confounded bystanders.
"He is despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."— Isaiah 53:3–6 (NKJV)
Do you see what is happening here? Isaiah is not seeing his own future. He is not receiving a vision of his own ministry expanding. He is beholding the glory of Another — the Suffering Servant, the One who would bear the sin of the world. The prophetic gift, at its truest and highest, is not self-referential. It is not a window into your greatness. It is a window into God's redemptive purposes — and it will always make you smaller, not larger, in your own eyes.

2. The Difference Between the Gift of Prophecy and the Gift of Dreams
Scripture is clear that God gives the gift of prophecy to build up His people. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 14:3 that prophecy speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. True prophecy edifies — builds up the Body of Christ. It exhorts — calls people toward God and His Word. It comforts — anchors the suffering in the faithfulness of God. And critically, it is always aligned with Scripture. It always points to Christ and His purposes. It never contradicts the written Word of God.
The gift of dreams is equally biblical. Joseph received dreams that ultimately preserved a nation through famine (Genesis 37; 40–41). Daniel received visions revealing the rise and fall of world empires (Daniel 7). And the prophet Joel, confirmed by Peter at Pentecost, declared that in the last days God would pour out His Spirit such that sons and daughters would prophesy, young men would see visions, and old men would dream dreams (Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17). God has always spoken through dreams. This is not in question.
Not every dream is a prophetic dream. Not every vision of your future is from God. Some "dreams" are simply the desires of our flesh dressed in the language of the Spirit — and the enemy of our souls is extraordinarily skilled at presenting counterfeit visions of greatness that feel, in every emotional texture, as though they came from Heaven.
- It is Christocentric. Genuine prophetic direction exalts Jesus, not self. If a "word from God" consistently places you at the center of the story, pause and pray carefully.
- It is Scripturally verifiable. God does not contradict His written Word. A dream that leads you away from biblical obedience, biblical community, or biblical morality is not from God — regardless of how vivid or emotionally powerful it felt.
- It is redemptive in nature. True prophetic direction carries the aroma of the gospel — it points toward salvation, reconciliation, others being served and lifted. It tastes of the cross before it tastes of the crown.
- It is concerned with God's kingdom, not personal comfort. Isaiah was not comforted by what he saw in chapter 53. He was commissioned. He was sent. True prophetic calling sends you outward in service, not inward in self-fulfillment.
Here is the danger that must be named plainly: when we mistake our personal ambitions for prophetic direction, we stop hearing God and start engineering circumstances to match the dream we have already decided to believe. This is not faith. It is a sophisticated form of self-will — and it is more common in the Church today than most of us care to admit.

3. Living for God vs. Living for Our Future Dreams
Isaiah's diagnosis is both ancient and relentlessly current: we go our own way. Not necessarily in the dramatic, openly rebellious sense — though that too. More often, in the quiet, gradual, almost imperceptible way that we redirect our obedience from God's call to our own vision. We add spiritual language. We quote the promises. We reference the dream. And slowly, without even meaning to, we have made ourselves the author of the story that was supposed to be His to write.
We must speak plainly about what might be called "sanctified selfishness" — the spiritual-sounding wrapper we place around ambitions that are, at their core, our own. It shows up like this: "God told me I'd be a leader" becomes an unconscious excuse to avoid the humiliation of genuine servanthood today. "God showed me my future" becomes a reason to bypass the slow, unglamorous work of present-tense obedience.
"We quote the destination to avoid the journey. We invoke the promise to sidestep the process. And in doing so, we do not accelerate God's plan — we delay our own formation."
The Suffering Servant's soul was made an offering for sin. He was not satisfied in earthly comfort. He was not satisfied in recognition or renown during His ministry. He was satisfied — deeply, finally, eternally satisfied — in seeing the fruit of His suffering. In seeing souls redeemed. That is the model of a truly prophetic life: satisfied not in the vision of our own greatness, but in the unfolding of God's glory through our yielded, sometimes painful, always purposeful obedience.
4. Responding to God's Voice vs. Natural Impulses
The prophet Elijah, exhausted and afraid after the confrontation at Carmel, encountered God not in the wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire — but in a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:12). God speaks with clarity, but rarely with coercion. He does not shout to compete with our impulses. He does not repeat Himself to drown out our distractions. He speaks — and those who have cultivated a posture of quietness and surrender will hear Him. Our impulses shout. His voice whispers. And if we are not careful, the loudness of our desires will fill every quiet space where His word was meant to be received.
👁 The Power of Surrendered Silence
"He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth."— Isaiah 53:7 (NKJV)
There is a holy power in the silence of surrender — in trusting God even when He is not explaining Himself, even when the outcome makes no sense, even when every impulse within you is demanding an answer. Our impulses demand explanation. Faith waits. And in that waiting, the voice of God becomes clearer than any shout our flesh could manufacture.
Discernment is not mystical — it is practiced. Here are five practical markers for discerning whether a direction is genuinely from God or emerging from our own impulses:
- Does it align with Scripture? God never contradicts His Word. Full stop. A direction that requires you to set aside biblical truth is not from God.
- Does it require sacrifice, or only reward? God's calls almost universally lead through a cross before they lead to a crown. If the "direction from God" you are following is consistently comfortable and self-serving — be watchful.
- Does it produce humility or pride? Genuine prophetic direction produces increased dependence on God and tenderness toward others. It does not produce swagger or entitlement.
- Does it bear the fingerprints of Isaiah 53 — a servant spirit, a willingness to be despised and rejected in obedience to God? If your "calling" requires that everyone affirm and applaud it to remain viable, it may not be a calling at all.
5. A Pastoral Call to Surrender Your Dream to God
Perhaps you have been carrying a dream for a long time. Perhaps it began in a moment of genuine encounter with God — a prayer meeting, a quiet morning in the Word, a season when Heaven felt unusually near. And perhaps, over months or years, that dream has slowly become something you are protecting rather than surrendering. Something you are building toward rather than offering back.
If that is where you find yourself tonight, this is not a rebuke. This is a gentle, pastoral invitation: lay it down. Not because God cannot fulfill it. Not because the dream was necessarily wrong. But because the version of you that is gripping the dream is not the version of you God wants to entrust it to. He is after your open hands, not your clenched fists.
Isaiah 53:12 gives us the ultimate portrait of surrendered living: "He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." The Son of God poured out His soul — completely, without reservation, without negotiation, without a backup plan. And it was precisely in that total surrender that the greatest work of redemption in all of history was accomplished. This is not incidental. This is the pattern.

The God who inspired Isaiah to write the exact manner of the Messiah's death seven centuries before it happened is more than capable of ordering your steps, fulfilling His purposes through your life, and bringing to completion the good work He began in you. Trust Him with the dream. Lay it on the altar. What He raises from that altar will be immeasurably more than anything you could have engineered yourself.
Father, I confess that I have sometimes held my dreams more tightly than I have held You. I have called my ambitions "Your will" and called my timelines "Your timing." Forgive me.
Today I lay before You every vision, every plan, every picture of the future I have been carrying — even the ones dressed in spiritual language. I ask You to search my heart and show me what is truly from You and what has been from me.
Replace my agenda with Yours. Replace my timeline with Your sovereign purposes. Make me a person who hears Your voice clearly — not because I have great spiritual gifts, but because I have surrendered my own will deeply enough to be still in Yours.
I trust You, Lord, with all of it. In the name of Jesus, the Suffering Servant, the Risen King — Amen.
Closing Reflection: Questions for Personal Journaling or Small Group Discussion
- When you think about "God's plan for your life," how much of that picture is rooted in specific Scripture and prayer — and how much of it has been shaped by your own desires, cultural expectations, or the words of others?
- Isaiah saw God's glory through the lens of the Suffering Servant — not personal triumph, but redemptive sacrifice. What would it look like for the "dreams" you carry to be filtered through that same lens? What might change?
- Is there a "dream" or personal vision you have been holding onto that has subtly become more about your recognition, comfort, or success than about God's kingdom and the good of others? What is one honest step toward releasing it?
- Reflect on the five markers of discernment from Section 4. Apply them to something you currently believe God is leading you toward. What do you discover? Are there areas that do not hold up under examination?
- The Servant "opened not His mouth." Where in your life is God calling you to the surrendered silence of trust — to stop demanding explanations, stop forcing timelines, and simply wait on Him? What is one practical way you can practice that surrender this week?
